Is Everyone Rowing in the Same Direction?

In the Execute phase of the Plan Execute Monitor Analyze (PEMA) cycle of progressive improvement, the plan is underway. Attention now shifts to communication, efficiencies, and resources to ensure that everyone is working on the right things. Does everyone have the tools and information to do their job well and make the best financial decisions for the business ?

In previous posts, we introduced the Plan Execute Monitor and Analyze (PEMA) concept as an iterative cycle for progressive improvement. PEMA also provides a practical framework for the challenges faced by financial professionals in manufacturing operations.

Here are some common challenges for those tasked with financial responsibilities in the Execute phase and the system capabilities that are critical to meeting those challenges.

Role Based Workbenches – As work moves through your operation it passes though many workbenches. Workbenches act as automatic feeders for downstream workbenches, but they are all connected. The output of one workbench becomes the input for another. To maximize effectiveness, users need to be able to quickly identify current priorities and have confidence that the work that has arrived from the upstream workbench is ready for action. Workbenches also need to be well equipped with the right tools and information to allow users to work efficiently.

Streamlined Workflow – Workflow should strike a balance between control and facilitating progress; combining the “what is permitted” with the “what can be automated” for the workbench. Workflow should also bring high information value and communication at every step along the way. Not all work that crosses a workbench is the same, so workflows also need to be configurable to match the work.

Manufacturing CRM – A well designed Manufacturing CRM brings a combined sales and operations view of your relationship with your customer – origin, communication between your team and theirs, sales and service history and future commitments. The Manufacturing CRM should be mission control for managing the valuable relationship you have with your customers.

No Broken Telephones – Your ERP should also be the keeper of knowledge that happens internally and with your customers. It should be easy to schedule appointments and record communication with your customer for others to use. Instruction and notes important for the various workbenches should flow seamlessly across the workbenches.
